Center for Worker Education and Labor Studies
The Institute provides union members with access to the University in all five boroughs, offering an extensive system of academic support, and developing new programs to meet the needs of workers for personal growth and career advancement. The Institute provides students with an educational experience that develops their communication, technical, and critical thinking skills, and deepens their understanding of the world in which we live. In this way, the Institute meets many of New York’s most critical workforce development needs while simultaneously providing individuals with the tools they need to take leadership roles in the workplace and broader community.
Center for Labor, Community and Policy
The Institute is also dedicated to revitalizing a strong and democratic labor movement and supporting labor’s efforts to create a more equitable society. It brings together union activists, academics, and community leaders to focus on issues and policies that impact workers and their communities. Many of the Institute’s initiatives are designed to encourage rank-and-file workers to play more active and informed roles in their unions, workplaces, and neighborhoods. The Institute conducts research and publishes articles, books, and the journal, New Labor Forum. It holds monthly forums, organizes national conferences, develops public education programs, offers leadership development, convenes labor and community coalitions to develop public policy, and provides a number of venues for dialogue and debate on the future of the labor movement.
